SoBran, Inc. is seeking a Senior Laboratory Technician to serve at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland (Building 33).
OVERVIEW: Responsible for all activities required for the proper care and maintenance of NIAID Division of Intramural Research animals.
Description of Duties:
Perform duties of Laboratory Animal Technician
Perform procedures requiring various levels of biohazard containment
Supervise and direct daily activities of technical personnel to ensure that all required functions are carried out appropriately, including receiving animals, handling and restraint, health surveillance, equipment maintenance, supply inventories, animal manipulations, laboratory procedures, and other contract-related duties
Assist with training technical personnel according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Schedule technical procedures and assign daily activities to personnel performing technical procedures
Read and understand technical requirements stated in Animal Study Protocols (ASPs) and discern discrepancies between technical requests and ASPs
Ensure that Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) are adhered to by the technical staff and suggest modifications to supervisor
Participate in interviews and selection of technical personnel
Collaboratively work with investigators to establish and maintain breeding colonies
Ability to work flexible hours as needed to ensure research needs and experiments are carried out in compliance with appropriate timelines
Report any abnormal conditions of the animal facility or immediate vicinity to supervisory staff
Perform other duties as assigned
SCHEDULE: All employees are expected to perform their duties as assigned, arrive to work at 7:00 am and depart at 3:30 pm M-F. You will be required to work on the weekends as scheduled. The weekend/ holiday hours are from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm (no more than 8 hours per day). In addition, you may be expected to work extra hours during an emergency situation or if any unexpected situation arise until work is completed.
REQUIRED EDUCATION: Must have a high school diploma or equivalent; must be certified by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science as an Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) or be currently eligible for the certification and become certified within 10 months of obtaining the position.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: 3 years of experience in a laboratory animal facility, leadership experience preferred. Position requires a strong command of the English language. Must have experience in such specialty areas as rodent, non-human primate, ferrets, guinea pigs and other regulated species, timed matings, species-specific technical procedures, barrier management, understanding of facilities management, and date management. Must have a working knowledge of all levels of biohazard containment. Experience working in an ABSL2/3 environment is a plus. Must complete the required training and receive clearance on the duties of Senior Laboratory Animal Technician.
